Karen Fraser has been a champion of Entrepreneurship for the past
30 years. She has created and facilitated presentations in every province in Canada on the vital
role of entrepreneurial skills and the near future economy.
"Entrepreneurial skills are the skills of the future and this
is where women excel".
Ms. Fraser's interest in the field began when, as a new business
owner in 1973, she was frustrated at the lack of information (and the abundance
of dire predictions) available for women business owners. In true
entrepreneurial style she responded by developing the first courses in
entrepreneurship for women at Ryerson Polytechnic University and
George Brown College and by founding the first women's network in Canada.
Ms. Fraser was the first to teach entrepreneurship to high school
and university students. She was the coordinator of the first Women's
Entrepreneurship course in the Faculty of Management and Entrepreneur in
Residence at the University of Toronto. Ms. Fraser created The Canadian
Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
Her theories and observations on entrepreneurship are quoted in
several business books and textbooks on the subject. She is a frequent guest on
radio and television, and appears in numerous newspaper and magazine
articles. Ms. Fraser hosted a series on entrepreneurship on TVO for 3 years.
Volunteer Work: Ms. Fraser served 2 terms as President of Women Entrepreneurs of Canada. She is just Past President of The Learning Support Council and The Greater Toronto Community Clearinghouse and co- founder of Project: Warmth. She is the founder of Canadian Experience a network for entrepreneurs and newcomers to Canada. Ms. Fraser has served as a Director of The North York Women's Shelter, Vice Chair of The Canadian Centre for Corporate Policy and Ethics, Promotion Director for The Canadian Association for the United Nations Environment Programme and served twice as co-chair for TheToronto LEAF Person's Day Breakfast Committee.
She received An Ethics in Action Award for Ongoing Social Responsibility.
Ms. Fraser's book, Women Like Me, The Women's Business &
Networking Directory was first published as a networking
support system for women in Toronto. By the 8th edition it was national with an
expanding international section. The Directory, a first for Canada, a
bestseller since its first edition, continues to innovate to meet the needs of
entrepreneurs. Its ability to keep ahead of the business times comes from
another focus of Women Like Me.
Ms. Fraser's ability to accurately translate change into
opportunity has made her a sought after presenter on workplace and
related lifestyle trends by corporations, government ministries, universities
and community groups. A journalist dubbed her "the only futurist with a
past
".
