When you run a business your passion for the idea gives you an edge and I believe the same holds true when you volunteer. If you select a community project or charity that inspires you the "edge" will be reflected in the quality of the networking.
My first interest in Remembrance Day grew out of childhood experiences. Interest turned to action following a seminar audience discussion. The presentation on the history of women entrepreneurs in Canada (Did the Vikings Have a Business Plan?) brought comments on the lack of recognition of women's roles in past and present wars and their global commitment to peace in very dangerous places.
Moments to Remember
A few weeks later, with members of my network, I laid a wreath at the Remembrance Day ceremony in honour of the women of war. Our wreath started with W which left only one group waiting ahead of us in the presentation line. The Canadian Vietnam Veterans had a small tragedy when the banner fell off their wreath. They were rescued by our purses that instantly produced safety pins. Women doing backup again!
The second year I participated I stood beside an elderly gentleman in a WWII uniform. He was very shy and quite diminutive in stature. Two young American soldiers who had been in the parade approached him and asked about the full array of medals that he was wearing. As he explained each one I watched the faces of the two soldiers and soon realized that this unassuming man must be quite extraordinary. When he finished the soldiers said they were honoured to meet him and shook his hand. Then they stepped back and saluted him. The look on the man's face will stay with me.
Sharing, Caring & Daring
When people are drawn to an event by their passion for the cause they tend to be very open and generous. This is certainly true at Remembrance Day. As we left the event last November we walked a block with the mayor and had a chance to explain Canadian Experience to him and catch his interest. The women I have met over five years have gone on to become cabinet ministers, run for the head of their party and be promoted to senior corporate positions. We have kept in touch and done many things together based on increasing shared interests.
